Brainsport reopening cautiously as provincial restrictions end

Saskatchewan is lifting all public health restrictions on Sunday — but that doesn’t mean shopping at Brainsport is returning to normal right away.

Brainsport serves a large swath of the community — including people who are immunocompromised — and, in order for staff to properly fit people for shoes, they need to get up close and personal with customers.

“The vast majority of my customers and my staff, they don’t want change quite yet,” Brainsport owner Brian Michasiw says. “So we aren’t going to make changes right away.”

That means staff will continue to wear masks and customers will be required to wear masks to enter the store. Cleaning rituals will continue and the one-person shoe-fitting stations set up last spring will remain. The store will re-evaluate these measures in August.

“No business owner enjoys policing things at all, in any way shape or form. And I wish I had a time machine and we could go back where things were way more relaxed, but that’s just not a reality,” Michasiw says. “I need to keep my customers and my staff safe and comfortable.”

The store will continue to operate Tuesdays to Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. No appointments are needed.

Brainsport’s online store is here to stay, offering free shipping on orders over $150.

Wednesday evening run club has resumed under the leadership of the Saskatoon Road Runners Association. That group meets at 6 p.m. at the park at the corner of Eastlake Avenue and 11th Street East beside Nutana Collegiate.
