Buffs for Winter

OMG the laundry! In the summer, my running kit barely fills the bottom of my backpack, but now that the real weather’s here, I feel like I put on and take off an entire load of laundry for each run. There’s no escaping it, though, because every layer matters when it comes to winter running. So, the outer layers don’t get washed quite as often as the inner ones. Maybe the cold cleanses them?

One piece of winter gear that I hate to be caught without is my Buff. I think every runner needs one of their all-purpose Original Buffs, but did you know that they make styles that are winterized? Here’s a breakdown of some of the best:

Original Buff

This is their classic, washable, breathable, 4-season, head and neck protector. Around 0°, it feels as warm as adding another layer on your body. Below -5°, it’s essential. Did you know that they’re made from recycled PET-bottles?

Reversible Polar Buff

This is an Original Buff on one side with a layer of cozy Polar Fleece on the other side. It’s Brainsport staff Steve’s favourite winter style. He says that it stays soft and comfortable, even if it becomes wet from sweat or condensation.

ThermoNet Balaclava

Nobody wants a balaclava that’s too tight, and the best ones manage moisture to resist sogginess. Buff has teamed up with Primaloft to develop products that are thin, lightweight and warm. This extra-breathable balaclava can easily be layered under a hat or helmet and it’s extra long so cold air won’t creep in at your neck.

Windproof Bandana

This is for the baddest-of-the-bad cold and windy days, the days when local radio won’t stop talking about the windchill, the days when your eyelashes freeze together. Today, for example. It’s completely windproof, with laser-cut perforation to facilitate breathing and hearing. The inner lining wicks moisture away to keep you warm and comfortable. This fabric doesn’t stretch like the other Buffs, so they’ve added adjustability at the back, so you can get the fit just right.

Buff still makes great neck tubes, but their materials and designs have become really sophisticated since the Original. If you’re looking for gear that you can trust, and that you can wash a lot, they’re one of my favourites.

Stay warm, Streakers!
