Why is running so popular?

It seems that everywhere you turn, running’s popularity is growing. There are examples across Saskatchewan:

  • Registration is trending up for the Saskatchewan Marathon later this month in Saskatoon
  • Beaver Flat 50 near Swift Current sold-out in less than a day
  • The Synergy Credit Union Sunrise Run in Lloydminster this coming weekend is sold-out with a new attendance record

There are many other examples, but the questions is: why is running’s popularity growing?

“I think running gets popular when people’s lives get too complicated,” said Brian Michasiw, the owner of Brainsport. “Everyone’s life seems complicated with inflation, war, mental health and more. Running gear is relatively cheap compared to other sports and it’s time efficient. Also, it can be a socially connective activity.”

Warren Dudar – one of the co-owners of the Beaver Flat 50 trail race – agrees on the social angle. “Running is also just an excuse to hang with your friends,” he said. “And trail running seems to amplify the social aspects of the sport.”

On a worldwide perspective, some of the trends are eye-popping:

  • Participation in running events grew by 39% over the last four years
  • An estimated 785 million people are now running
  • Attendance at run clubs grew by 59% in 2024 (the last reported year for this stat)

So, as the weather improves, grab a friend and head outside for a run. But keep one thing in mind if you plan on increasing your mileage: rotate your shoes. “That is super important,” continued Michasiw. “By switching-up your shoes your body gets diversity in its foot strike. It also gives the foam in the midsole a chance to recover. Training shoes are expected to last 500-800 kilometres.”
