Megan Wotherspoon is learning on the fly during her remarkable challenge of running 1,500+ kilometres from the top of Saskatchewan to the bottom of the province. The Saskatoon ultra-runner is one week into her quest and has covered almost one-third the distance.
“This morning I started at 443kms,” she texted yesterday from the roadside of Highway 905 in northern Saskatchewan. “The experience has been amazing.”
After starting last week in Stony Rapids – a small hamlet near the Saskatchewan-Northwest Territories border – Wotherspoon will hopefully arrive into La Ronge later this week.
“Running everyday has been surprisingly challenging! I hadn’t trained for long gradual hills. They are runnable but I did too much too soon, which is why my hamstrings were tired… 50km days are good. But I’m surprised what a difference 60km makes. It’s a bit harder to recover for the next day, but it’s early and my body is adapting,” she continued.
“I am bit behind my arbitrary schedule. I was supposed to be in La Ronge on Thursday, but with a few shorter days I (expect) to be later.”
Wotherspoon is quick to thank her friends and family who have joined her on this challenging northern leg of the journey. You can follow her running quest on her Instagram feed: meg.runs.south.
FINISH LINES: This final story this week will warm your heart. Thanks to Judy Warick for providing the tip! The Top Notch Masters group from Saskatoon traveled to the Vancouver Sun Run earlier this spring – and dominated several age classes. This is no easy accomplishment – considering 57,000 runners entered the 10K road race! Six members of the Saskatoon-based club finished in the top 10 of their age class. Congrats!!
